Landscape and Human Health History
In 1993, Frances Kuo founded the Human-Environment Research Laboratory (HERL) with William Sullivan to study the relationship between people and the physical environment. Andrea Faber Taylor, a past HERL graduate student and current post-doctoral scholar, became a co-director of HERL with Drs. Kuo and Sullivan in 2004. Dr. Kuo’s body of HERL research firmly established the importance of trees and greenspace to stronger, safer communities and robust concentration, self-control, and coping in individuals. In 2006, Frances Kuo founded the Landscape and Human Health Laboratory (LHHL) to focus on this relationship between human health and greenspace. She would like to thank past undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs who have worked with her in the former HERL.
The Old Vegetable Crops Building shown here in a ca. 1920 photo formerly housed the Human-Environment Research Lab and the Landscape and Human Health Lab.
Interdisciplinary approach
The Human Health and Landscape Laboratory is committed to using an interdisciplinary approach. Scientific questions do not fall neatly in the realm of a single discipline, and the solutions to the problems explored at the Human Health and Landscape Laboratory must satisfy the constraints of both human nature and the physical environment. As a result, we attempt to involve researchers from different disciplines in every research project. Dr. Kuo has advanced degrees in both cognitive and environmental psychology. Dr Faber Taylor’s academic background includes both study of horticulture and children’s behavior and environments. Future collaborations will include faculty in the departments of both kinesiology and leisure studies, as well as forestry practitioners.
